Beginning his wrestling career in 1977, Regal achieved his greatest success in the AWA during the mid-1980's. He defeated Buck Zumhofe for the AWA World Light Heavyweight Championship, and later began teaming with "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin, claiming a tag-team title victory over the formidable Road Warriors.

Regal would later sign with the NWA's Jim Crockett Promotions, where he captured the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship, becoming the only wrestler in history to hold both the AWA World Light Heavyweight and the NWA World Junior Heavyweight titles simultaneously.

After Regal's run with the NWA, he moved on to the WWF; a move which proved catastrophic to his career. Regal found himself struggling to gain popularity amidst numerous larger-than-life WWF superstars vying for the public’s attention. After a short stay, he would leave the WWF, never to wrestle for a major U.S. promotion again. Regal toured the independent circuit for the next decade, until he retired in 1996.
