In 2010, after completing his excursion tour, Kushida began his wrestling in NJPW.

Kushida quickly made an impact in NJPW's junior heavyweight division with his unique wrestling style and technical abilities. He competed in the best of the junior heavy weight tournament in 2010, 2011, and 2012. A few months after his the 2012 tournament, Kushida began teaming with Alex Shelley as the Time Splitters. The team went on to win the SuperJunior Tag Tournament and then the IWGP Junior Heavy Weight Tag Team titles.

Throughout his NJPW career, Kushida held the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship six times. He first won the belt on July 4th 2014, two weeks after the Time Splitters had won the IWGP Junior Heavy Weight Tag Team titles for the second time. During his various reigns as IWGP junior heavyweight champion, he engaged in memorable feuds with notable wrestlers such as Kenny Omega, Hiromu Takahashi, and Kyle O'Reilly.

In 2019, Kushida made the decision to leave NJPW and signed with WWE. He debuted in WWE's NXT brand in April of 2019 and stayed with the company for 3 years before returning to NJPW.
