Eric Esch, better known by his in ring name Butterbean, began his career in combat sports in the early 90's. Competing in Tough Man competitions, Butterbean was recognized as a professional boxer though did not compete against challengers ranked by any of the 4 major boxing promotions. By the end of 1997 he had amased an impressive record of 37-1-1 and had won the IBA Super Heavyweight Championship.
On the November 10th 1997 episode of WWF Raw, Butterbean made a special appearance in the audience. While an interviewer was preparing to speak with him, Marc Mero interrupted, launching into a series of insults directed at Butterbean. Mero also insinuated that Butterbean was making inappropriate advances toward his wife, Sable. This lead to a match between the two men on the WWF pay per view D=Generation X in your house, where Mero punched Butterbean in the dick resulting in a DQ win for Butterbean.

In 1999, Butterbean was brought back to the WWF to compete against Bart Gunn at WrestleMania XV. Unlike Butterbean's previous appearances, this match was considered legitimate. While professional wrestling often blurs the line between scripted events and real competition, this fight is generally recognized as a true contest. Despite the elaborate pageantry surrounding the event, the match lasted only 35 seconds. Butterbean, who significantly outweighed Gunn, won by knockout after landing just a few punches. This match marked Butterbean's last appearance in the WWF and Gunn's final appearance until 2003. Ultimately, it was a highly publicized bout that did not enhance the standing of either competitor within the WWF.
