Geronimo
Born in Southern Arizona in 1829
Died February 17, 1909

Geronimo was known throughout the Southwest as a great Apache war leader. He was most feared for his guerilla raids against Mexican and U.S. troops. Geronimo was a member of the Deindai band of the Chiricahua Apache. In 1876 the Chiricahua were forcibly removed from their land but Geronimo fled to Mexico where he was soon arrested and returned to the new reservation.

Throughout the 1870's Geronimo led numerous raids on settlements throughout the Southwest. The U.S. Army attacked Geronimo in his mountain hideout in mya of 1882 and returned him and his people to the reservation. On May 17, 1885 Geronimo, 35 of his warriors, and 109 women and children fled the reservation again. On May 25, 1886 Geronimo surrendered to General George Crook. He later fled but then finally surrendered to General Nelson Miles on September 4, 1886. Geronimo was transported along with 450 Apache men, women and children to Fort Marion and Fort Pickens in Florida after the government breached an agreement. In 1894 they were again moved to Fort Sills in Oklahoma.
