Ninja II Custom Contest
Mercenaries, covert agents, master assassins, and supernaturally enhanced killers. These are some of the many faces of the ninja. No matter how you describe them there is no denying that they have become an iconic part of our culture. With that in mind the goal for this contest is to create a custom of a ninja. You could go with one of the Mortal Kombat ninjas, one of the many ninjas of GI Joe, an original character, something from the TMNT franchise, or one of the many ninja from anime and manga. There is no shortage of potential entries for this contest.

-Since there is a fine line between martial arts fighter and ninja, we are going to keep it simple. If a character is referred to as a ninja in their source material, then they qualify for this contest. For example: Snake Eyes is a ninja, Strider Hiryu is not. Naruto is a ninja, but Deadpool is not.

-Samurai will also be allowed for this contest. Though they are the polar opposite, they are so closely associated with the ninja that they are fair game for this contest.

-If a character has been done as a ninja themed action figure for a toy line then they are fair game for this contest. For example Ninja Spawn, Ninja Sabretooth, and Ninja Robin. You may do your own ninja version of these characters, you do not need to mimic the officially released version.

-No dioramas will be allowed for this contest. However an exception will be made if it involves Ninja fighting Pirates.

-As always there are no size restrictions for this contest. You may use any sort of materials, parts, tools or techniques that you wish. Whatever gets the job done..

I was wondering since no one mentioned in the rules or in any previous post, are video game characters (ninjas) allowed to be entered into the contest, such as ryu from ninja gaiden or joe musashi from shinobi?

Ninja from any source material are allowed, including video games.

What if the figure you enter is similar to another customizers figure but with added changes and slightly different base figures.

There's no prohibition on submitting similar, or nearly identical, customs at Figure Realm. Indeed, it's fairly common for a contest to have several entries of a popular character that fits the challenge's theme.

If their work was inspired by another customizer's, Figure Realm members will often mention it in their custom's description. While it's not required, if that is the case, it is a nice gesture to acknowledge your peer if you are trying to replicate their work. For example: "I really liked so-and-so's Wolverine, so here's my stab at making the same figure."

Awesome reply Patraw!
I especially commend what you say about acknowledging other's work sourced in a custom, it's not only polite, but helps the uninformed and newbies starting out learn about what's going on in the scene and other good work that has come before.

What about TMNT's Shredder? Would he qualify?

Shredder is the master (Jounin) of an entire ninja clan (the Foot), so he's most definitely a ninja!

What about akatsuki in naruto?
They are ninjas without masks.

Ninja don't have to wear masks, that's the popular stereotype, but, historically, most ninja wore "normal" clothing and would easily pass for an everyday citizen (which is ideal if you don't want to be noticed). There are many ninja in anime/manga, video games, etc. that don't wear masks.

So what would be the difference between a martial artist and a ninja, besides being an assassin? Cos I've always considered Batman both, he uses techniques of ninjas, as in stealthiness and weapons.

Where Elektra is clearly a ninja, what is the verdict on Psylocke? She has killed but isn't an assassin,(well not now anyway) if that's the main difference here.

While ninja are often depicted as killers, all ninja are not assassins. Some are just spies, thieves, saboteurs, etc., but don't take lives.

Like Green Skin said in the rules, in order to qualify, a character has to be referred to as a ninja in whatever source material they come from (just because someone knows some ninjutsu techniques, that doesn't necessarily automatically make them a ninja). So, that's the litmus test you need to apply for whatever character you're thinking about making (a quick search of Wikipedia should be all you need for most characters to find out whether they're a ninja or not).

Or, again, as the rules state, if a character has had a ninja-themed toy produced in the past, then you can make them as a ninja. For example, McFarlane Toys' Ninja Spawn I & II. Most people wouldn't consider Spawn to be a ninja, but, because he's had ninja-themed toys, he's legal subject matter.

Hello, I have a question. Although Firefly is presented as a ninja master, I suppose it can not be considered a true ninja? aside his mask, he doesn't have the usual characteristics of ninja, does he ?

He's a bit unconventional but he's a ninja, in the comics at least. He was the Faceless Master of the Koga Ninja Clan.

This is just FYI for people who may be doing a search for characters to make: the Japanese have several words for ninja, besides ninja itself: Kunoichi (female ninja), Jounin (high-ranking ninja and/or clan master), Chuunin (mid-ranking ninja and/or ninja commander), Genin (low-ranking ninja, or, in other words, a ninja grunt), and Shinobi (just another name for ninja in general--I believe, historically, this is the more correct term).

Soo...just to get this out of the way: Would Batman have to be done as a specifically 'Ninja-version' Batman? Not that I'm going to make one, but I'm sure it will come up.

As far as this contest is concern Batman is a martial artist and not a ninja, so yes he would have to specifically be done as a "ninja batman"

So any charater done ninja style would be ok. Just wondering this kinda contradicts what I asked about deadpool.

"If a character has been done as a ninja themed action figure for a toy line then they are fair game for this contest." This is why a ninja batman is okay, there's never been a ninja style Deadpool release so he won't work.
