Hocus Pocus Custom Contest
Wizard, witch, warlock, sorcerer, enchanter, magician, illusionist, mage, priest, conjurer, shaman, seer...whew. Seems like there are a million and one names for magic users these days. Whether as the heroes or the villains, magic users have been a part of our story telling since we started telling them. So in honor of our fascination with magic the objective of this contest is to create a custom of a magic user. All practitioners of magic are allowed whether they come from comics, books, movie, cartoons, or television. Here are some lists to get you started: Marvel, DC, general media, and just for giggles.

-Characters that use magic weapons or items as their main source of power are allowed. Such as Nico Minoru/ Staff of One, Nightmaster/ Sword of Night, Ragman/ Suit of Souls, Hood/ Norn Stones, etc.

-Dragons, phoenixes, faeries, centaurs and other 'magical creatures' are not allowed in this contest unless they are a known spellcaster.

-As for the Scarlet Witch, the nature of her abilities has bounced around enough that we will consider her a magic user for the purposes of this contest.

-Dioramas are not allowed for this contest.

-As always there are no size restrictions for this contest. You may use any sort of materials, parts, tools or techniques that you wish. Whatever gets the job done..

I'm confused by the rules here. I see a few entries one of which Songbird is all tech and no magic. Moonstone got her powers from an Kree gravity gem. I just don't see how these are allowed.

Add the Richards kids to that list as well. Many of these contests are like that.

It's a little late for the 4th of July, but how about a patriot themed contest? ... and it doesn't have to be just the USA, it could be any country. Just a suggestion.

Would it be considered cheating if I submit a figure I actually completed some time ago but never posted on this site, officially? I did re-paint her recently.

There is no rule against it so long as it hasn't been posted elsewhere. Go for it.

What about a character like Link, from the Zelda series? I mean he is generally viewed as a warrior, but he does regularly use magic spells, tomes and books.

Link would be okay since his main weapon is the Master Sword.

The rules say that dragons, fairies, centaurs, phoenixes, and other magical creatures aren't allowed, but many fantastic creatures are also spellcasters. For example, in Dungeons & Dragons, it's typical for intelligent monsters like dragons, fairies, demons, etc. to have several levels of spell proficiency in the mage and/or priest schools of magic. I'm not talking about the creature being "magical" just because it's a fantastic creature, I'm talking about them employing the very same spells that humans and demihumans use (I.e., I wouldn't consider a dragon or demon that doesn't know any spells to be a magic-user, but I would for ones that do).

So, are you then saying that only humanoid spellcasters are allowed? And, if so, where are you drawing the line exactly, anatomically/racially (that's a very sticky question, as the fantasy genre is rife with spellcasting races/species)? Are elves legal? Half-elves? Half-dragons? At what point does an entity with unusual anatomy become a "creature"?

Personally, I would propose that the criteria could just simply be that the character is a known spellcaster, not what race/species they happen to belong to. That'd make troubleshooting/moderating this particular challenge much easier.

Whoops, I clearly should have proof read this. There is supposed to be more to that line of the rules. Thanks for the catch.

That addition addresses my concerns, thank you.
