Make Mine Marvel Custom Contest
Excelsior, True Believers! For this challenge, the goal is to customize any character from Marvel Comics. The three best entries will be awarded shiny Gold, Silver, and Bronze No-Prizes!

- In addition to anything from the "normal" Marvel Universe, character variations from alternate continuities/time-lines/dimensions are also valid subject matter (Age of Apocalypse, Marvel 2099, Ultimates, What If?, etc.) Adaptations of Marvel characters into media other than comic books (movies, cartoons, toy lines, video games, trading cards, etc.) are fair game as well.

- Marvel's interpretations of licensed properties are off-limits. In other words, even though they published comic books focusing on them, you can't make stuff from franchises like Conan the Barbarian, G.I.JOE, Robocop, Star Wars, ThunderCats, Transformers, etc., because Marvel doesn't own them.

- Crossover characters, from other companies, comic book or otherwise, are also prohibited (no Marvel/DC amalgams, Capcom entities from the Marvel vs. Capcom video game series, etc.) That said, amalgams whose component characters all come from the Marvel Universe are acceptable.

There are no size or scale limitations and you should feel free to use whatever base bodies, parts, materials, tools, and techniques you like to bring your Marvelous creations to life. 'Nuff said.

I'm curious, out of what's left, which are not on the level? All the remaining entries look solid to me.

Also noticed a few entries are now gone. Disqualififed?? If so...maybe a few others should be considered as well, especially if they are supposed to be anonymous ...

I don't know; you'd have to ask one of the moderators or Captain Coder.

Agreed! It is a cool concept but you should have at least updated the current figure with any photos you may have had. Although, many of the entries fall nearly into the same category. Always strange goings on. It's all in fun though, right?

Just noticed something...Contest entries are not supposed to be posted on other sites, until the contest ends, correct?? Some of the entries are showing up on other sites, kind of spoils the contest if you ask me...

If individuals are posting their entries on other sites, prior to the conclusion of the voting process, then they are in violation of Figure Realm's custom contest rules and the offenders should be reported to a moderator so that the appropriate action can be taken.

I saw were it said no franchise stuff but I was wondering if that included THE MEN IN BLACK. I know it's now a movie franchise but it started out in comics first with Aircel publishing it in 1990 until Malibu bought them out in 1991 & published it until they were bought out by Marvel in 1994 who then released some issues in 1997 when the first movie came out. Plus in the credits (or opening titles) it even states the movie is based off the Marvel comics series.

Men In Black didn't start out at Marvel, but Marvel currently owns the property, so, that makes it legal subject matter for this challenge.

Are characters from or based on characters from "the nam" comic book allowed cause as far as I am aware, that was a marvel original comic ?????
avatar
Patraw -
Wednesday, May 23, 2012
Yes, The 'Nam characters would be okay (the Viet Nam War isn't something that "belongs" to anybody, intellectual property-wise, so there's no conflict.) Additionally, the Punisher appeared in several issues of The 'Nam, which would seem to be indicate that it's considered to be a canon part of the Marvel Universe.

Hey are my hero Duckies acceptable or are they too non-published alternativeish?
avatar
Patraw -
Monday, May 21, 2012
Rubber duckies are generic everyday objects, so I don't see any problem, as I wouldn't consider them to represent a prohibited crossover. Marvel characters fused with My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, etc. would be off-limits though, because those are specific intellectual properties.

Cross-over Iron Man armors? Like a Darth Vader armor.
avatar
Patraw -
Friday, May 18, 2012
No crossovers period, sorry. Darth Vader is not part of the Marvel Universe, so you can't make a Darth Vader themed suit of armor for Iron Man.

Ah, these rules just seem to foster so many questions... Is an original interpretation of a Marvel character Kosher for this? I.E. Spider-man as a homeless person on blue & red sweatpants?
avatar
Patraw -
Friday, May 18, 2012
I guess an original interpretation of a Marvel character would be okay, say, like redesigning their costumes or something, provided you're not mixing in stuff from non-Marvel properties (the no crossovers aspect of the rules still applies.) Your example of a homeless Spider-Man wearing blue and red sweatpants would be all right.

Are crossovers aloud? like a character dressed as someone from marvel? Like for instance (and this will not be my contest entry if any) optimus prime as spiderman?
avatar
Patraw -
Friday, May 18, 2012
No crossovers period, sorry. You could dress up one of Marvel's character as another Marvel character if you wanted (the Hulk wearing Captain America's outfit for example), because that's Marvel-centric, but you may not dress up a non-Marvel character, like Optimus Prime, as a Marvel character. Likewise, you cannot dress up a Marvel character as a non-Marvel character.

Yes, teams of Marvel characters (Fantastic Four, X-men, Avengers, etc.) are fine.

It says that you can't make any character that Marvel doesn't own even though they might have appeared in Marvel Comics. GIjoe,Transformers,Star Wars and some other toy properties all had comics published by Marvel back in the day. Also none of the Capcom characters from the Marvel vs. Capcom games. I doesn't matter where you get the parts from as long as you are making a Marvel character.

The rules are a little confusing, I agree. Is it allowed to use GI Joe parts? or any other toy lines?
avatar
Patraw -
Wednesday, May 16, 2012
You may use bodies or parts from any toys that you want, in any scale, including G.I.JOE figures. You just can't make actual G.I.JOE characters (even though there were Marvel G.I.JOE comics years ago) because the focus of this challenge is on Marvel-owned characters (G.I.JOE belongs to Hasbro.)

This may seem like a stupid question, but I'm a little confused. Are we making a marvel character out of anything, or making anything out of a marvel character?
avatar
Patraw -
Wednesday, May 16, 2012
The focus of this challenge is making characters from the Marvel Universe only.

You can make a Marvel character out of any components that you like--in the interest of creative freedom, I generally allow participants to use any base bodies, parts, materials, etc. that they want.
