When Miki's mother died, she decided to leave Japan to find her American father, but on her arrival in the city, she was abducted by the Diavolo. Her terror deepened when she found herself heading to the flesh market.

Before being sold however, she was rescued by Sheppard, who killed her captors. Sheppard found that while in captivity, Miki had overheard many Diavolo secrets. He knew she was still in danger. Since she had nowhere else to go, Sheppard acquiesced to her request, and allowed her to live with him. Over the next few months, Sheppard took her into his confidence and began training her in case he failed in his mission and she had to go on alone.
