"The universe has to move forward. Pain and loss, they define us as much as happiness or love. Whether it's a world, or a relationship... Everything has its time. And everything ends."- Sarah Jane Smith, Doctor Who (2005) "School Reunion" ~*In Memory of Elisabeth Sladen (Feburary 1, 1946- April 19, 2011)*~ If the Doctor is the definate article, then Elisabeth Sladen was the Companion, the definate article. So in tribute to this remarkable actress who turned her three year tenure on Doctor Who into a 30+ year odessey, here is Elisabeth Sladen as the Doctor's iconic companion in her most memorable attire, the Andy Pandy outfit, from her final episode of the original series, "The Hand of Fear". This figure began as the Sarah Jane figure from the Sarah Jane Adventures two pack set, Sarah Jane and the Slitheen. The hair and red shirt of the original figure were removed, all paint stripped from the head sculpt and hands, and the entire figure was sanded down and shaped. Since the figure was originally wearing boots a lot of sanding went into removing the footwear and the heel was sanded down. Her red and white socks were painted with acrylics and sealed. I created a faux leather by painting thin fabric with fabric paint and created a pattern for the top of the shoes. After the "leather" upper shoes sides and tongue were glued on, the sides and soles of the shoes were sculpted out of white milliput. The shoes were painted red and white with details around the laces and top of the shoe added with white dimensional fabric paint. Laces were added using a needle and thin string. I altered a shirt pattern to fit and used a stretchy fabric from one of my own shirts. The shirt is removable. The overalls, as well as the rest of the outfit, are as screen accurate as I could manage and removable. I tracked down a picture of the fabric online, sized it to scale, and printed the pattern onto fabric. The pattern for the overalls came from a pattern for doll pants bottoms that I altered and the rest I created based on screencaps. The bottom of the pants have drawstrings in them and tie at the ankle; the waist also has the same drawstring closure and button under the arm that is made from part of an earring and thread. The strap closures were made from the eye part of a sewing hook and eye fastener that were reshaped with pliers. The purse and bandana that makes a brief appearance at the beginning of "The Hand of Fear" are made from fabric remenents. The watch is two pieces- the traditional watch band woven into the bracelet- and made out of paper, painted with acrylics, and made durable with modge podge and acrylic sealer. I used milliput to fill out the head sculpt a bit and the head sculpt was repainted with acrylics and sealed. The hands were repainted and sealed. Her hair is hand dyed angora mohair that was cut and styled according to Lis's hair in THOF. This is only the second figure of this size that I've ever done- I come from the 1/6 world- and I'm very pleased with how she turned out. Now if I can only finish up the first figure- the 4th Doctor- I'll have a happy pair. :D Feedback welcomed and appreciated. ![]() |
