This was entered in the Sight Unseen contest. The premise was to present something we hadn't seen before. As I do from time to time I chose to read between the lines and found justification to reincarnate our very familiar Man of Steel as described by the witnesses of his first overt public super feat. I gave my description in the form of an article written by Lois Lane. Throughout the article you will see this Amazing Stranger is more powerful than a locomotive, faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Perhaps it was too clever or simply to thin an attempt to create a new perspective on my favorite hero: Early Friday evening saw an unusual turn of events in what looks like a remarkable act of absolutely fantastic vigilantism on the Metropolis suicide slums outbound L-Train. Witnesses say two armed gunmen subdued the conductor, raided the first passenger car demanding money and jewelry and assaulted 2 passengers. Things were already frantic as the train moving at nearly 90 mph was brought to a near immediate halt on the south side ridge in the shadow of Lex Corp Towers. Within seconds, passengers say, an unidentified man blistered through the first two cars cornering the assailants and disarming them only in time for one shot to ring out as the first assailant apparently shot his own partner in the foot. As quickly as the unidentified man burst through he flashed by the entire crowd in cars 1 & 2 with the bandits in hand. The conductor says he only saw the two criminals dangling from a telephone pole before he was set up on his feet with his hands unbound. " I don't remember standing up but I guess it could have been the adrenaline. I checked the first three cars for injuries but everyone seemed to be fine. By the time I got to the control platform the two goons... They were GONE!!" One elderly passenger from the first car only had to say,"Bad guys come in... They make some noise... They get mean... Then Boom!! They're gone!!!" He laughs, "atleast somebody did something!... Let me get outta here... I got ice cream meltin'." While reports are varied to this vigilante's appearance several accounts corroborate to say he was a white man 6'2" - 6'6" with black hair wearing a red centurion style cape. His outfit seemed to be a swirl of red and blue and possibly yellow. One witness even said he had a yellow tornado or lightning bolt across his chest. Several reports from the 5th car state that the man lept up the telephone pole, grabbed the two would be crooks and bound into the sky like a grass hopper off a blade of grass with a thunderous boom as he disappeared into the distance over the Daily Planet News Building. Only minutes later the two dazed criminals were found on the steps of the Central Precinct with their hands tied around each other with their shoestrings 5 miles from the scene of the crime. Both were positively identified by passengers within hours. Can a man jump 5 miles? Carrying two full grown men to mention? Most marathon runners can make a 5 minute mile... But a 5 mile minute? Has Metropolis gone crazy? "Crazy? Yeah it was crazy... One second I'm scared for my life... My heart's racing, The next second... BLAMMM!!! No more bad guys!!! I could hardly see anything but I'd kill for the chance to say Thank You!." Passenger John Corbin attests happily as he leaves the downtown platform on his way to work as a security guard at Star Labs. The press was soon removed from the subway station as Federal Agents overtook the block at Central and Clinton until early Saturday morning. -Lois Lane The Daily Planet ![]() |
