Custom #:52077
Name:Cyclops with Optic Blast
Custom Type:Action Figure
Toy Series:X-Men
Creator:customapprentice
Date Added:July 24, 2013
Base Figure:DCUC Black Lantern
Height:6.00 inches
Hello. Once I completed the brown-suit Wolverine I had to have an 80's style Cyclops. I've wanted to do this custom for a long time actually but just recently acquired the perfect base. So maybe I rushed it,.. I started with a DCUC Black Lantern figure, removed the lantern costume details with the dremmel tool and an x-acto knife. Then I sculpted the top of the boots and the bottom of the gloves. The visor is a random piece of fodder that kinda looked like a visor so I sculpted over it. The optic blast itself is just two thin pieces of plastic glued together and painted, then attached to the visor with glue. The entire figure was painted in the 80's uniform colors.
*UPDATE* Thank you to everyone who made a suggestion and offered their feedback. It was most helpful but I think I am done with this custom now. I may revisit this guy in the future but I have a few other projects I'd like to start. Thank you all for your comments and help.

I wish I could accept credit for that! Actually the hair was one of the reasons I chose the black lantern as a base. I love how it looks all blown back! But alas that is a factory sculpt, all I did was paint it. However, since doing the touch ups on the figure, I've painted the hair black and dry-brushed it brown. It looks pretty cool now, I'll update once all the little things are done. Thank you for the comment!

Thank you NeCrollector! It's interesting to see that some folks are actually pleased with this custom, while others(like me)think it still needs some work. I hope you still like it when I'm done with the touch ups and additions! I had no idea Cyclops would be this difficult to customize! Thanks again for the comment!

I think to give it just a little more of the 'wow' factor, id say make is optic blast look like its shooting out with some troubles like have a little explosion thing right in front of his visor, and maybe add a few straps to the figure, but overall, good figure

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I agree with you, it needs some WOW. Thankfully JonMichael reminded me about his belt,..I'm not sure about the straps as I wanted to stay away from the 90's look for the character, but I hear you about adding some "flare". The optic blast should probably a "blast" effect too,..Great advice! Excellent feedback sir! Thank you for taking the time to comment and help a customizing brother out.

Everyone who makes customs knows that you are never 100% satisfied with a figure, you always feel like you could do more. But, this is a well done figure!

The optic blast may seem simple, but it works and looks good. If you want something with a bit more substance/thickness, you could look at plastic silverware. I know some other customizers have used clear (or clear red) silverware and just cut the flat handle off.

The vizor looks good, I wouldn't change it! I like that you made it metallic, it helps it stand out. I've always thought of the vizor as a constructed piece of machinery, made out of metal. I don't think it would be a flat yellow like his costume. You, also, didn't go overboard with it's size.

Your paint work, also, looks good. The yellow came out really well. Yellow has always been a pain for me. Maybe, give the figure a matte seal to take down the shiny-ness?

I would suggest you just focus on little details to add, like a belt. Cyclops usually had a belt with this style of costume. Sometimes it was red with a square yellow X buckle, sometimes it was the same yellow as the rest of the suit. You could add the top part of the mask, too.

Hey JonMichael! Thank you so much for the suggestions and the feedback dude, I not only appreciate it but I really needed it! The plastic silverware is a great idea. I'm definitely gonna try that and see how it looks. I'm glad you like the visor! I kinda do too, I guess I could just clean it up a bit. I'm also glad that you think the paints are ok because I thought I was missing all kinds of important spots,..I must have painted it about 4 times. The yellow actually wasn't that tough. I did a base coat of white first, and then about three coats of the yellow.
Dude thank you so much for reminding me about the belt. I knew something was missing yet I totally forgot about the belt! I will remedy that on the version 2. As far as the mask, I kind of like how his hair seems like its being blown back by the force of the optic blast coming out. However, I may sculpt the mask resting on the back of his neck, like a hood thats not being worn.
JonMichael thank you again for the awesome suggestions and feedback bro' I'm grateful!
