Scratch-built statuette of the character 'John Harrison' from J.J. Abrams' 2013 film Star Trek Into Darkness. The model was sculpted around wire/foil armature components using FIMO polymer clay.

The model was sculpted and baked to harden in numerous stages, for example, the initial basic head shape was sculpted and baked so I could then create layers of facial detail without deforming the skull size/shape through handling. After the face was done, this was baked again so I could go on to work on the hair without squishing the face by accident. Similarly, the basic bare arm shape was hardened before I began building up layers of the jacket fabric and all of the folds and creases. A similar gradual stage-based process was used for every part of the model, and I finished by sculpting around all the seams to create the completed statuette.

Some sand and small stones were used to create the base, and the statuette was painted using various acrylic model paints.

This is my first ever attempt at doing a facial likeness based on a real-life actor, and as you can probably tell, it doesn't really look that much at all like Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the character in the film. Trying to get the layout and shape of the features correct on a pretty small scale was really difficult, and is something I need a lot more practise at. Still, for a first attempt I think it could have been a lot worse, and I'm quite happy with the model overall.

You're doing some very interesting work...a few things I need to say:
1. Your sculpting skills are wonderful - you're a very talented sculptor with a great eye for details both small and large.
2. Your painting is beautiful - all the shading you do, particularly with the clothing, is top notch.
3. Those facial sculpting skills will come with practice. This scale is VERY difficult to capture likenesses in. The Kanye head you recently did was VERY good, not just in terms of sculpting, but also in painting.

Just wanted to encourage you to keep making these wonderful creations. You really are very talented and I know many of us here at The Realm really appreciate your work!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind feedback! Facial sculpting is something I'm going to be practising a lot with future projects. This John Harrison head was done entirely by eye and estimation, whereas with my recent Kanye sculpt, I used a lot more reference materials and used calipers to take layout measurements to try and replicate in 3D.
I'm also hoping to experiment with airbrushes and better paints to get the finish looking neater

Thanks again, I'll definitely have more work to share in the future!

I agree, be proud of this. Sculpting facial details is very difficult. That's why manufacturers sculpt in a larger scale and then let computers scale it down to the 6 or 4 inch size. I admire anyone who attempts to sculpt facial features. Great custom!!!

Thanks very much Interesting to hear that about the way manufacturers produce smaller heads; definitely makes sense. I may well have a go at sculpting larger scale heads myself, just to get used to the principles of capturing a likeness in 3D before attempting more faces on a small scale. Thanks again!

DUDE! Be VERY proud of this. Faces are THE MOST DIFFICULT thing to sculpt. This whole figure looks fantastic, and the likenesses you work at will get better and better. The figure as a whole is AWESOME and I immediately know who it is! The detail of ths costume is great and the paints seal it off!

Thanks very much! Sculpting clothing with folds and creases to give the appearance of real fabric was something new to me, and a bit of an experiment, so I'm really happy to hear your feedback about the outfit

Sculpting something from scratch is no mean feat, and I heartily applaud the skill put on display here, particularly in the realistic textures of his clothing!
