Here's my final custom of 2013: New 52 Red Robin. I've never really been a fan of Red Robin's old look because it does resemble Dr. Mid-Nite a tad too much, something that was even pointed out in one of the comic stories by Harvey Bullock. The New 52 design has been called "too 90s" but I do prefer it over the old one and tried to approximate that in custom figure form. The base figure is a Bruce Wayne from The Dark Knight Rises, the "undersuit" version onto which sections of his armour can be attached. It was a Comic Con exclusive in 2012 and I found the under-figure loose by itself. It's exactly the right body type for Tim Drake as Red Robin. I swapped out the lower legs for those from a Movie Masters Prototype Batsuit and the head for a Power Attack Batman Robin. I had to dremel down the large bit of hair that was jutting out over his head but I do really like the face sculpt. The harness straps were from an Azrael Batman and the straps around his arms were a tube from a Movie Masters Ghostbusters wand and backpack. The chest emblem was a circular piece of plastic from a Crocs jiblet with the symbol sculpted onto it. The belt was also from the Azrael Batman, with a section from a Black Widow belt. The wings took some figuring out. The wings were from a Marvel Legends Falcon; I attached the two pieces from each side together into two whole wings. Then, I joined them with a piece of twisty wire, sculpting onto it to hold it down. The twisty wire allows the wings to be articulated. I attached the contraption to the figure's back with sculpt. It looks pretty flimsy but to my relief, it holds up surprisingly well. This was finished off with a bo staff made from a section of a wooden chopstick painted metallic grey and coated with matte sealant. Thanks for looking and happy 2014 Realmers! Please wait... |
