Red Guardian (Marvel Legends) Custom Action Figure
Custom #:57846
Name:Red Guardian
Contest:Silver Age
Custom Type:Action Figure
Toy Series:Marvel Legends
Creator:Rabid_Ewok
Date Added:January 28, 2014
Base Figure:Cyclops
Height:6.00 inches
Here is the Red Guardian as he appeared in Avengers 43 & 44 back in 1967. I used a Marvel Legends Cyclops as the base, mainly because I had one in my fodder box that needed to be used for something. That Cyke figure was missing one hand, so I replaced them both with the hands and wrists from a DC Universe Classics figure, then sculpted new gloves. The head is a cast of DC Universe Classics Black Adam, with a styrene fin and sculpted mask. The belt buckle and stars on his torso were also sculpted.

Solid work. While it looks fine as-is, considering the basic design of his outfit, I think the figure would have benefited from a wash and/or dry brushing to accentuate the details in the musculature/fabric and the chest/back stars would contrast better with the costume if they were outlined in black or, alternatively, if the color of the stars themselves were a different hue. If you take a look at the other Red Guardian submission, the stars on that one stand out a lot better (although, granted, I'm not knowledgable enough about the character to know exactly when they switched the stars on the costume from red to white, so, maybe that wouldn't be accurate for a Silver Age rendition).

Thanks! I'm probably in the minority, but I'm not a fan of paint washes or excessive drybrushing, especially on older comic characters. I think a character wearing a bright colored spandex costume should look clean, and I've always thought paint washes just make a figure look dirty. As for the color of the star, there have been several different Red Guardians over the years, and the costume has changed a little each time. This particlar version, Alexi Shostakov, appeared in Avengers 43 & 44, and had the red star. As far as I know, the version of this costume with a white star was the one from the 90's, Josef Petkus. Anyway, I appreciate the feedback and suggestions.

It's true that paint washes and dry brushing are technically "lies"--upon close inspection they look exactly like what they are--paint. Real world clothing generally is just one color, the shadows we see are created by light.
