I had a huge pet snapping turtle when I was a kid. He was completely tame and I had hatched him from an egg that I found. He lived in a kids pool, and often ran free range around the house keeping our seven house cats on their toes! It was like having a pet dinosaur! When I found a spare vintage Slash figure, I knew that it was time to make a custom of him that reflected how tough he should have looked as a gnarly, mutated, evil snapping turtle. No pink/purple accessories and a much more realistic snapper green. I used ML Banshee as a base with Dremmeled parts from the original Slash fig. I reworked a full set of his weapons to make them more savage and made a smashed concrete base for him to stand on. I remade his mouth with some less cheesy looking teeth, replaced his neck with a magnetic joint for the best range of natural motion, gave him a ball jointed bandana so it looks like it's flowing when you put him in cool jumping and fighting poses, and sculpted warty flesh from head to toe. Let's face it, the original TMNT figures kind of set toys back a decade. They ushered in a trend of non pose-able, squat, overly cartoony figures that lasted through most of the 90s. That being said, the first few years of Ninja Turtles toys were pretty darn cool, and I wanted to bring modern levels of articulation and sculpting detail to this awesome character.
