So I managed to pick up a few of these EMCE Toys "Build Your Own Super Hero Kit" at a huge discount. And of course as luck would have it all the parts were there to get you to about 85% of a superman... or a few other generic super-hero-like characters using vintage retro Mego parts. So I took this Peter Parker style head and blue jumpsuit, red trunks & cape (removed the bat scallops), Capt America style boots and a yellow barbarian belt. I ran the boots through the saw to remove the boot cuffs, basically reducing them down to red shoes. and then took a piece of adhesive vinyl and wrapped a spare ego leg to create a pattern. I then attached the pattern to a piece of cardboard and made my master template to cut the boot tops from. Anyway... I could go on about that for a minute. But now for the first time a booted Mego figure has articulated ankles. A personal achievement. The cape is an alteration from the standard Mego cut. I can't stand how it has always just bunched up in the front and sat on the neck. I cut the cape apart and drilled holes in the chest to push the ends into and fastened with hot glue from the inside. The emblem is a digital cut vinyl on top of a layer of yellow vinyl and then on top of a layer of fiber carpet tape (works like a charm when sticking ANYTHING to fabric. The belt is turned inside out and then 2 strips of red are wrapped around to create belt loops on the trunks Past that I dropped a quick spit curl on the head and Supes was ready to look awesome. ![]() |
I must tell you however, this is likely NOT the first custom MEGO figure that wears articulated ankle boots. Way back in 1998, I created a Custom MEGO Batman that featured custom made boots that freed up his ankle articulation.
In any case, you have a most excellent custom Superman here..!
