An elegant weapon from a more civilised time....no longer! This is a lightsaber I constructed based on the recently released photographs of Kylo Ren's saber that he will use in Episode 7. Obviously this is not intended to be a complete replica of that saber but a similar prop designed for a similar character. The saber is constructed from various pipes, electronics and other bits I scraped together mainly from an old child's scooter I found lying around which provided the main two "tubes" for the hilt especially the cross-guard at the top obviously being the part where the handles of the scooter come out. Using the nuts, bolts, parts from my big box of bits (essentially a shoe box that contains any bits that would be used to make things like this from broken torches, plumbing parts and even a computer that I stripped down) I added the three emitters and the pommel, belt ring etc. I got an internal button from an alarm clock (that may or may not have broken when it was thrown across the room when it went off) and attached it at the top as the activation switch with a tiny plug and wire going from it into the handle itself as well as a red and yellow wire that sit in metal housing running up the hilt. This is based on the exposed mechanics of Kylo's hilt and also the skeletal hilt that Starkiller used in TFU. three rings of leather effect tape add a bit of depth to what was otherwise a very silvery hilt. Next came the best bit-making it battle worn and scarred. Taking my shiny newly built hilt I took a saw to parts to create gouges and scratches leaving it outside for a few days in the British weather I got some beautiful rust on the pommel and emitters and last but not least came the fire. Just singing the wires and around the emitters I created the marks that the blade as raw and powerful as the one seen in the trailer must cause to the materials of the lightsaber as it is used. This is hollow metal and the button is a functioning button so I may eventually get a sound card so it can turn on, however, the emitter isn't big enough for a blade so that wont be possible. Nonetheless a nice display piece that I may continue to work on in the future. ![]() |
