Stormtrooper (Star Wars) Custom Action Figure
Custom #: | 84348 | Name: | Stormtrooper | Custom Type: | Action Figure | Toy Series: | Star Wars | Creator: | he89thma56 | Date Added: | July 29, 2016 | Base Figure: | Square Enix Play Arts Kai Variant Stormtrooper (Knock Off version) | Height: | 10.25 inches |
I was very fond of the Play Arts Variant design when it was released late last year but I felt that the standard white color scheme didn't do the figure justice. So I did a black and red color scheme to not only make the details on the figure stand out but to give stormie a darker more menacing look that fitted their role as the elite soldiers of the Galactic Empire. After prepping the figure, I used Games Workshop Citadel Chaos Black as the undercoat. The details were then painstakingly done by hand using a mixture of Citadel, Formula P3 and Vallejo paints. After that, stormie was given a coat of clear gloss to protect the paint job. In all, it took me almost three months to finish this little gem but I am very happy with the outcome. Enjoy :) Please wait... |

I actually preordered an original stormie at the last minute as I seldom placed preorders & thought there would be sufficient numbers after the preorders were fulfilled. Turns out Square produced Boba, Vader & stormie in very limited quantity this time. So stormie ended up costing more (USD110) since it was last minute & cause of the exchange rate.
It was roughly a month after they were officially released that ko's started appearing on Ebay & the price was about half so I decided to get 1 ko stormie & 1 ko Boba for about USD180 (shipping included)as it was too expensive to preorder both original (Vader was sold out early) for repainting instead as I was a bit reluctant to use the original stormie since they were out of production.
So for those of you who are interested in getting this bad boys for customizing here is a review on the quality of ko stormie. Just take note though that these are 1st version ko's and they came loose while currently on the market they now have packaging and started producing bootleg Marvel & DC characters as well.
In terms of detailing, they are practically identical and the major difference is that the ko hasn't been given a gloss varnish over the armor parts. In terms of paintjob the ko is a little bit sloppy (helmet lining, grilles) and the color especially the blue is a little bit off but unless you have both to compare side by side you may not notice it.
The joints are overall quite good for Boba & stormie and they are a bit tight except for ko Vader (more on him shortly) The reason I say they are good for customizing is that stormie is easier to disassembly compared to the original. While you have to use a bit of force for the ko, the parts are quite sturdy so you don't have to worry about breaking something. I am a bit reluctant to use too much force to diassembly original stormie cause of the price and the quality of toys nowadays I consider them subpar unlike the 80's & early 90's.
Seriously, I was repairing the ko gun holster with superglue since the strap's original glue was starting to rub off due to the cleaning process and I decided to take a look at the original holster and I was surprised to find that it was starting to peel off at the edge. The best part is that other than taking a few pictures and posing stormie a bit. He was kept in a display case all the time and even then the glue was starting to come off.
For accessories, everything is included except the display stand for Boba but it was already stated in the listing as no stand included for Boba. So if you are planning to buy loose, make sure to check the description to see whether everything is included.
Now for Vader, I ordered this one from a local seller for about USD65 and he came with the box included. Overall the figure is ok for the price except his right hand is a bit loose so it tends to flop down. There was a ebay seller who claimed that the head and chest armor is different (he was selling original Vader) but without being able to make an actual comparison it's hard to verify the claim.
Currently there are only four Star Wars characters in the Play Arts series Stormie, Vader, Boba & Maul & yes all four have ko versions. Last I checked on Ebay, they were selling for average USD50+ with postage included while some toy stores in Malaysia are selling the box version for about average USD60.
Now a word of caution, while the ones's that I have are overall decent. There was a youtube reviewer who while reviewing a ko Vader the head snapped of so do be aware that some batches may be ok while some are poor and unfortunately there's no way to tell.
Also, because the Star Wars series were produced in very limited quantities. It is almost impossible to buy an original from reputable stores like Big Bad Toystore and the price itself has shot up to an average of USD300+ on ebay at one point. So take care as there's no way to differentiate a ko & original from the package alone.
The only exception is Maul as most stores still have him in stock most likely it's because his design is similar to the original Maul
Hope this helps
What are the differences between the bootleg and regular versions of this fig?
