To continue my "Golden Age Heroes Gone Bad" collection, I submit Sgt. States, from the pages of Paul Grist's Jack Staff comic. Jack Staff was originally a pitch for a Union Jack story at Marvel. When it didn't happen, Grist renamed the character and proceeded to make some really good indie comics. Sgt. States is Grist's version of Captain America. Though he fought alongside Jack and Grist's version of the Invaders, the sarg became the villain in the first Jack Staff story arc.
Sgt. States is a JLU Batman with the ears and glove fins shaved off. I removed the cape and filled in the extra space around the shoulders with Super Sculpey. The boots were totally sculpted with Super Sculpey. The gun came from a JLU Nemesis. The stars & stripes are hand-painted. After a few attempts to paint the sgt. stripes on the forehead, I eventually just hand-drew them on an address label, and cut it out with an exacto-knife.
I really loved the look of this character, but ran into some troubles pretty early on, when making the figure. Namely, the whole first series was in black & white. Though the comic eventually got some color, when it moved to Image, it took a while to piece together the color scheme (which I eventually did with the help of the internet).
