I was thrilled when Hasbro announced and showed off the Kingpin Build-A-Figure. And then... the more I looked at him, the more disappointed I got. I couldn't figure out why at first, and then it hit me: His outfit had too much white in it. That's definitely not how I picture Fisk. So, I knew I'd be getting an extra Kingpin figure; one for Kingpin himself, the other for the upcoming Shadow King (the head of which I'll be doing a mod to, so keep your eyes peeled for that one). This allowed me the benefit of being able to make one of the Kingpin BAF's into my ideal version of the character. If you've looked through this thread, then you know by now that I definitely tend to favor the classics. The look I went with for Kingpin was definitely inspired by John Romita Sr.'s art and a few Sideshow Collectable statues I came across. Recipe: Kingpin BAF King Carnage head: Monster Venom BAF (came with Carnage) Cane blaster effect: Thor-Valkyrie 2-pack The arms easily pop out of the Kingpin body, so I removed those without a problem, as well as the jacket overlay. I then heated, removed and sanded down the joints in Kingpin's legs to try and avoid paint rub. I also sanded away his tie; I just don't picture Kingpin wearing a tie, especially a loose one. I then sculpted his ascot, as well as a gold, spherical stickpin. I mixed some plum with white to get what I feel is the perfect shade of purple for his pants. I painted his vest orange, and his ascot a light teal-blue. I painted the buttons on his vest and the stickpin gold. I love the "Born Again" story-line, and the alternate angry head is my homage to that story-line. During his fight with the Kingpin, Daredevil busts his nose up pretty good. I toned it down a little; I just couldn't make sense of that much blood being on the actual nose, and thought the blood trail dripping down his nose made more sense. I didn't care much for this head before the blood, but now it's really gown on me (I guess I'd be pretty ticked if someone broke my nose, too). I didn't just want this figure to be a (mostly, save for the ascot and stickpin) simple repaint though, and thought I'd add some value to him by making him a bonus alternate head. I remembered these cool 90's trading cards; the Jackal was mixing the DNA from various Spider-Man foes, and one of them was a character named King Carnage, an amalgam of Kingpin and, you guessed it, Carnage. I had this extra Monster Venom head sitting around for a while when it hit me that this head would be perfect for that look from the trading card. I painted it a flat grey before applying the black and red coloring. It fits on the body perfectly without my needing to have altered it in any way. I left the paint on the King Carnage head glossy for a wet, symbiote-like look. I also left Kingpin's pants shiny for a sort of silky look before I used some Modpodge to flatten the colors of his vest and ascot. I now have what I consider to be the definitive look for Kingpin in figure form and I'm very proud to have him amongst the other Spider-Man and Daredevil villains of my collection. ![]() |
