Sculpting Stars Custom Tutorial
Shows an easy way to transfer difficult shapes to clay.

Please wait...
Stars usually need to be as perfect as possible.
One way of creating them is to simply buy them pre-made and glue them onto the figure. Check stores that sell confetti or christmas decorations for little thin plastic stars.
You can find star stickers in places like nail salons or where they sell cell phone decorations.
Try getting a hole-punch with a star-shaped cutter, then punch stars out of electrical tape to stick them on.
If you have more money than you know what to do with, buy a 3D printer, pay someone to model a star-shaped "cookie cutter" in the size you need, and print that out easily stamp out the stars.
You can't go wrong with just sculpting them though, especially if they need to have some thickness to them.
Materials Needed:
•Thin blade
•A flat tool
•Photoshop (or whatever free alternative)
•A printer, a premade star, anything you can trace onto paper so you can cut out a star pattern.
Stick a blob of clay onto the figure. Press it down so it's about the size and thickness you need it to be.
Measure how big you need the star to be (I use millimeters), then create and print out the star. Cut it out and press it onto the clay so it stays there on its own.
Use the thin blade to cut along the edges and pick away the excess clay.
I suggest you use a blade that looks like a chisel tip for more precision, the one shown here isn't ideal but it gets the job done.
Carefully remove the paper template. Use the flat tool to clean up the sculpted star by nudging everything to where it needs to be.
It's okay if the star is too thick, just make sure the shape looks good.
Once the clay hardens, sand it to thin it if needed, and to get rid of any tool marks.
This method can be applied to any complicated shape, simply use the paper template and blade to quickly get 95% of the way there and clean up the shape as need.
